Sutro Baths – A Unique Gem At The Edge Of San Francisco

Sutro Baths

Sutro Bath Sunset Views

Sutro Baths is a unique destination on the edge of San Francisco with amazing coastal views, multiple nature trails, and explorable abandoned ruins. If there was one place to take friends that are visiting San Francisco, Sutro Baths would be it. Sutro Baths is a popular tourist destination and an iconic landmark that makes San Francisco unique in my opinion. To me, it’s amazing that nestled within a huge metropolitan you can find cliffs, crashing waves, caves, the Pacific Ocean, a beach, and a short hike.

What To Expect Visiting Sutro Baths

  • Multiple trails along the cliffs and down to the shoreline
  • Parking lot with 20+ spaces, but is crowded during the day
  • Visitors center with well-maintained restrooms by the parking lot
  • Free roam allowed in the Sutro Baths ruins and Cave
  • Busiest during early to late evenings (3 PM – 6 PM)

History of Sutro Baths

Given the unique landscape and the visible remnants of man-made structures in the water, people often ask, what happened here.  Well, the site belonged to Adolph Sutro, which in the 1890s built an indoor saltwater bathhouse for the general public.  The bathhouse was powered by the saltwater incoming and outgoing during the tide cycles.  In 1966 the site burned down and taken over by the National Parks Service in 1980.

Getting to Sutro Baths

Sutro Baths

Sutro Baths is located at the northwesternmost tip of San Francisco. It’s at the intersection of Great Highway and Geary Blvd.

Parking At Sutro Baths

The main parking lot by Lookout Cafe has a lot of spaces, but during busy hours you may be circling for a bit and waiting to get lucky to find a spot. Further up the hill is the Lands End Main Parking. It’s a bit off the main road and is not as well known to tourists so maybe easier to find a spot.  The Lands End Parking lot is a .2 mile walk to Sutro Baths.  It’s a pleasant walk and you will be rewarded by views of the Golden Gate Bridge along the way.

Things To Do at Sutro Baths

For additional information, maps, cafe, and more importantly restrooms, there is a NPS visitors center right by the Main Parking lot.

Walk Down To The Sutro Bath Cave

Exploring the Sutro Bath Cave

To the right of the water pools and tucked into the cliff, you will find the entrance to a somewhat hidden cave.  The cave is shallow and brings you to an opening on the other side of the cliff.

Wander the Sutro Bath Ruins

Sutro Baths Ruins

The area is open to exploration and is a popular spot for engagement photos or you know, Instagram.  Additionally the site does get crowded at times so take extra caution as some parts maybe slippery or too narrow for two people to walk side by side.

Take A Hike On The Lands End Trails

Sutro Baths Trails

There are a bunch of short trails that loop back to the parking lot. For a longer  (<2mi) out and back you can check out Lands End which will take you towards views of Golden Gate Bridge and the Lands End Labyrinth.  Check out the Lands End Map for more details on the different trails.

Dine At The Cliff House Overlooking The Pacific Ocean

Sutro Baths Cliff House

Located on top of the bluffs, Cliff House provides dining with sweeping ocean views.

Catch The Sunset Over The Pacific

Sutro Baths Sunset

Given the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, watching the sun disappear into the Pacific Ocean horizon is an amazing experience that will never get old.

Trail Profile

Below is the profile for a sample trail down to the Caves and up to the lookout point. Approx double the distance to get back to the lot.
