Roadtrip to Carmel – A Day Trip Itinerary
Carmel-by-the-Sea Roadtrip
Carmel-by-the-Sea is an enchanting and romantic seaside destination which is a popular roadtrip destination known for it’s historical magical village ambiance and picturesque Carmel beach. This beach town is a perfect place to go for a romantic weekend getaway and escape from the busyness of the city.

How to get there from San Francisco
If you are planning to visit Carmel by the Sea from San Francisco, there is only one main route. This main artery is Highway 101 to Highway 1. Due to the weekend, traffic can build up early. On a positive note, you will have a chance to pass through two of the most scenic roads in California. Similarly, you can also opt to take a quick detour to “17 Mile Drive” which will take you to the town. Consequently, there is an entrance fee to drive through the “17 Mile Drive” road, but driving down Highway 1 yields the same experience for free. Though it may be a worthwhile detour if you are in to golf since you will pass by Pebble beach, which is home to the iconic Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament.
Top things to do in Carmel
Take in the sun at Carmel Beach

Carmel Beach is a mesmerizing stretch of soft white sand and it is among the most stunning beaches I have been to in California. The beach features a secluded vibe, like a place only locals would know about. At the far end of Carmel Beach you will find rocky bluffs that adds to the picturesque nature. Most noteworthy, as an added bonus, there are iconic and rare cypress trees which line the boardwalk. Because of its dangerous rip currents, rogue waves, and lack of lifeguards, the beach is not suitable for swimming. Rather than swim, the beach is a great place to go for nature walks, playing volleyball, and sunbathing.

Running parallel above Carmel Beach, is a path known as “Scenic Bluff Path” which, as the name suggests, guides you along the top of the bluffs. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy the panoramic scenery of the ocean without getting sand in your shoes.
Explore the shops and hidden alleyways in Downtown Carmel

Downtown Carmel is surrounded by lovely art galleries and shops that you can explore. If you wander around the side streets, you are going to find small garden courtyards, passageways, and boutique shops.

The highlight of downtown Carmel are the tiny, bamboo-lined passageway that links the San Carlos Street or Mission Lane with Dolores Street and offers picturesque scenery.

This aquarium is just a 10-minute drive north from Carmel. At one point, it was one of the largest aquariums in the United States. It is located in the neighboring town of Monterey and known for its kelp forest exhibit. As a fun fact, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was where Disney drew it’s inspiration for Disney’s Finding Dory.
Go for a short hike at Point Lobos State Reserve

Point Lobos is a small state park which is located just south of Carmel. It is surrounded by hiking trails right on the cliffs of the coast. You can often spot local wildlife such as harbor seals and sea otters while exploring the trails.
