Montalvo Arts Center – Enjoy A Day of Hiking and the Arts
Montalvo Arts Center is known for its rotating art exhibits, but you may not know that the center also has beautiful gardens and hiking trails on the site. Located in Saratoga, California, the Montalvo Arts Center is a non-profit center for the arts close San Jose. Today I’m going to share with you my guide to the incredible hiking trails and gardens you’ll find on the site, as well as everything you need to know to plan your next visit.

Montalvo Arts Center – What to Expect
- Parking – There are multiple parking lots on the site, depending on where you plan to spend your day. Lot 1 is located just past the Front Lawn. There are three other lots to the left and right of the villa. Parking is free at Montalvo Arts Center. The hiking trailheads are close to the parking lots.
- Hikes – Montalvo features over 150 acres of hiking trails and gardens. The woodland hiking trails guide you to views of Santa Clara Valley and through Coast Redwoods.
- Gardens – The grounds are home to an incredible collection of gardens. There are many different species of both native and exotic plants to see. Don’t miss the Italianate Garden, which is the centerpiece of the gardens here.
- Park Hours – Hours vary by the season. From April – September, the grounds are open from 8 am to 7 pm Monday to Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm Friday to Sunday. From October to March, hours are the same from Friday to Sunday, but reduce to 8 am to 5 pm from Monday to Thursday.
- Admissions – There are no admission fees or parking fees at this site. However, if you are looking to attend a special event, you may need to look into getting a ticket.

Things To Do At Montalvo Arts Center
The Montalvo Arts Center is the perfect day out for the whole family, thanks to its wide range of activities for visitors. The Villa Montalvo is a historical landmark over 100 years old and surrounded by beautiful gardens and miles of hiking trails. It’s the perfect place to pack a picnic and enjoy some nature or art. One of the highlights of any visit is hiking up to the lookout point, where you can enjoy views over Silicon Valley. There are also some fantastic outdoor art installations, which families will enjoy strolling around and viewing.

Montalvo Arts Center Gardens
If you don’t fancy hiking during your visit, the gardens themselves are beautiful for strolling around. While at Montalvo, be sure to visit the Italianate Garden, with its Cypress trees and hundreds of white roses. I also loved the Phelan Cactus Gardens, which showcase many exotic plants. If you plan to bring a picnic lunch, you can find a spot on the Great Lawn, where you’ll be able to spread out your picnic blanket and enjoy the summer sun.
The gardens are also home to the Art on the Grounds program, a highlight for many visitors. This program provides everchanging sculptures and installations throughout Montalvo. There’s always something new to see each time you return. The artwork on display is both contemporary and historical, so it will appeal to everyone’s tastes.

Hiking at Montalvo Arts Center
For me, the biggest draw at the Montalvo Arts Center are the fantastic hiking trails on offer. With miles of hiking trails, there will be something for everyone, depending on how energetic you are feeling. If you park in lots 3 or 4, you will be close to the Lookout Trail, which is the most popular trail on the site. Alternatively, you can take a longer loop to reach the lookout point from behind the Historic Villa. The trail slopes upwards to the lookout point, but you will be rewarded with fantastic views over Silicon Valley for your efforts.

If you are looking for something that’s of a gentler hike, there is also the Creek Trail that’s located by parking lot 2. This hike connects with the North and South Orchard Trails. You really could spend a full day exploring the trails here, and they are the perfect workout without being too strenuous. Most of the hiking trails are shaded.

Popular Trails
1. Lookout Trail – By far the most popular hike on the site, this is my top recommendation for visitors. You can take the shorter version of this trail, from parking lots 3 and 4, or the longer version, which starts near the villa. The shorter hike will be about a 1.2 mile round trip from the parking lot, whereas the longer one will give you a good 2-mile round trip.

2. Nature Trail – This hike is easy to combine with the Lookout Trail. The Nature Trail is a fun trail for visitors of all ages. Here you’ll see long vines that hang down to make you feel like you are in a jungle. It’s a fun shorter route if you are looking for a quick round trip to enjoy with children and is well shaded throughout.
Is Montalvo dog friendly?
This is the perfect site to enjoy a day out with your dog. Dogs are allowed to hike with you on the upper hiking trails; however, they can’t walk around the grounds of the villa itself or the botanical gardens. Your dog will need to be kept on a 6-foot leash during your visit at all times.

Special Events
Montalvo is a great event space with its gardens and theaters. It’s popular for special performances or events, including comedy and musical performances. The center hosts many different public festivals, art classes, and literary events, so there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
Tips For Visiting Montalvo Arts Center
- Get to the site as early as possible, especially if you are visiting at the weekend hike at Montalvo. If you are planning to enjoy the Lookout Trail, I’d recommend doing this first thing in the morning, as the paths are quite narrow and can become crowded.
- Bring a picnic with you to enjoy a full day out, which can be enjoyed on the Great Lawn.
- Before visiting, check out the events calendar to see what is going on during your visit, as they have some fantastic events here throughout the year.
- Check park closure dates in advance of your visit. The park closes early on some dates for special events.
Montalvo Arts Center is one of my favorite days out in the area and combines amazing hiking trails with beautiful grounds to relax on. I love to bring my lunch and a book with me, and come here for the whole day to relax. It’s a spectacular site that really is a hidden treasure for locals to enjoy, and the Lookout Trail and the views it affords makes it one of my favorite trails in the area.
