Twin Peaks SF

Twin Peaks is quite possibly one of the most popular destinations in the Bay area for the best views of San Francisco. It’s popular with both visitors and locals. Twin Peaks rises to about 900 feet in elevation and offers fantastic 360◦ views of San Francisco. The views from Twin Peaks include iconic landmarks such as the Pacific Ocean and, on clear days, the Golden Gate Bridge.

Parking is always a struggle in San Francisco, so be patient as you search for street parking. Check out Crestline Drive for some street availability or continue further up the hills and search for a spot in the small lot a little distance up. From there, you can set out on foot to the trailhead. If you’re not feeling the .7 mile hike that ascends the two peaks don’t worry. You can take your car to the North Peak parking lot and find a parking spot and enjoy 180◦ views. However, if you want the truly best views, grab your hiking shoes (or at least some sturdy tennis shoes) and hike the .7 mile trail that ascends the two peaks for an unbeatable experience.

Batteries to Bluffs Trail

The Batteries to Bluffs Trail is another scenic trail and overlook that has great views in San Francisco. It navigates the shoreline and provides a variety of different pathways to explore. You can take the trail towards Baker Beach (in which part of the beach is clothing-optional, just a warning). You can also continue to hike through the rugged stairs and bluffs for a pretty unforgettable view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. The hike is short, and you can create your own loop through the beautiful terrain, anywhere from 1-3 miles. Pack a backpack with a blanket and some snacks, and you’re on your way to a pretty great afternoon.

There are several parking and drop-off destinations to explore the Batteries to Bluff Trail, depending on your adventure level. You can drive towards Lincoln Boulevard and park on the street and access the trail marker. Or if you hit it right, you can park near Battery Cranston on Merchant Road and walk the steps down from there towards the trail.

Battery Spencer

If you’ve ever seen a postcard or an Instagram shot of the Bridge, then there’s a good chance it was from Battery Spencer. Battery Spencer has one of the most iconic and best views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The old abandoned military buildings add to the unique experience for visitors. Free to enter and always open, the 19th-century concrete battery features panoramic views of this beautiful city.

Battery Spencer is a super popular spot for locals, tourists, and tour groups. Therefore finding parking in the parking lot can be difficult. Another option is to head further down the road and find street parking and rent a bike and bike through to Battery Spencer. If you’d like a little extra adventure, continue down the road and park near the bathrooms. From there, head up Slacker Trail for another great view of the city. Make sure to bring a jacket for both trails. It can get very windy and chilly even in the summer months!

Grandview Park

Appropriately named Grandview, Grandview Park has the same great views as Twin Peaks without the crowds. It’s also affectionately called “Turtle Hill” by locals. This small elevated park in the Sunset District has almost 360◦ views of the Bay Area and offers a peaceful retreat in a busy in a bustling city. There is a lone bench on the peak but off to the side, there’s space to unfurl a blanket. It lends to an excellent afternoon for quiet reading or just taking in the views of the city below.

Located pretty close to the iconic 16th Street Mosaic Steps, this is a great spot to combine and hit two fabulous views in one visit. Parking is available on the streets below, either on Noriega Street & 15th Street or Moraga on 14th Street. Whichever side you decide to come up, take a quick .2 mile walk up about 110 wooden stairs, and you’ll find a beautiful hidden gem of San Francisco.

Sutro Baths

Back in the late 1800s, Sutro Baths were a large, privately-owned saltwater swimming pool. Sadly what was once the world’s largest indoor pool burned down in 1966, and all that remains is the concrete walls and outline of the once impressive building. However, today Sutro Baths are a destination that many venture to for some pretty unforgettable views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean.

To access the beach and coastline, you can find parking at the bottom near the beach, a small parking lot in between, or at the top of the cliffs towards Cliff House. From there you can walk through the well-worn footpath and clamber through the vegetation to get to the ruins. The ruins are close to the water so you may want to bring a jacket for that cool Pacific breeze. You can walk around the ruins but make sure to walk up the coastline a bit to catch a pretty great view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Muir Beach Overlook

As part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area, this is a popular and pretty well-maintained overlook. It’s a popular park that many locals and tourists frequent. If you’re looking for a view of the sunset, then Muir Beach and the Muir Beach Overlook are hard to beat. Located off State Route 1 and south of Stinson Beach, you’ll have amazing views of the Pacific Ocean and, if you visit on a clear day, views of San Francisco in the distance.

This quiet cove beach has a 450-foot long pedestrian bridge that connects the parking lot to the bridge, so it’s very easy to access. When you get down to the beach itself there is plenty of space to bring a blanket and a picnic dinner and enjoy the peaceful serenity of the ocean waves. Another cool feature to take advantage of is the fire rings (weather and fire-condition permitting). There are several fire ring pits throughout the beach that you can enjoy from 9 a.m. to sunset and set the perfect ambiance to a sunset night on the beach.

Slacker Hill

Slacker Trail is a moderate 1-mile trail that is located near Sausalito, California. Hiking to the top, you will get scenic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and greater San Francisco. While most of the trail is pretty easy to navigate, there’s one section (about 400 feet) that is a pretty steep climb. With a sturdy pair of shoes, you should be fine. Bring a jacket with you because the top has beautiful views but can be a bit chilly at the summit.

To access Slacker Trail, you can take exit 442 and then take a sharp left toward Conzelman Road. From there, proceed about a mile, and you’ll see a roundabout. At the roundabout there will be about a dozen parking spots (across from the Coastal Trail) and you can park there and pick the trail up for Slacker Hill.

Bernal Heights Park

Bernal Heights Park is a hillside park with gorgeous sweeping views of San Francisco and the Bay area. It’s considered a hidden gem with the locals. Bernal Heights has fewer visitors than Twin Peaks, but offers equally beautiful views of the surrounding area. It’s a very dog-friendly park (in fact there’s often more dogs than humans). It’s easy to navigate with little ones as well. One of the fun ‘icons’ of Bernal Heights Park is the rope tree swing that overlooks SF! There are several ways to access Bernal Heights Park. One way is from the Cortland side of the street where there are fairly easy stairs. Alternatively, you can also access the park from Folsom Street and Anderson Street via wooden staircases.
