Battery Spencer – The Best Views of the Golden Gate Bridge

Are you looking for the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge? Battery Spencer provides, in my opinion, the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco skyline. At an elevation of 470 ft., the views are so incredible it was once the site of military coastal gun batteries that protected ships from coming into San Francisco Bay.

Golden Gate Vista Views

From the top of the coastal bluffs at Battery Spencer, you can see marvelous views of San Francisco, cargo ships passing under the Golden Gate Bridge, and even the occasional humpback whale.

Battery Spencer History

In addition to the fantastic views, Battery Spencer has incredible natural, cultural, and military history. Those marvelous views have a practical significance as well. With this strategic viewpoint overlooking the inlet to San Francisco Bay, it was once an active coastal gun battery in the late 1800s. Its strategic location helped protect access to the San Francisco Bay and had been armed with three M1888 guns that can fire projectiles at 20k ft/sec. It is named after Major General Joseph Spencer, who was a Revolutionary War general for the Continental Army. Marin Headlands, where is Battery Spencer located was once home to the Miwok Indians and now protected and maintained by the National Parks Service.

Getting To Battery Spencer

Located right before the Golden Gate Bridge toll, most visitors end up driving to Battery Spencer before or after crossing the bridge. It’s at a convenient location for visitors coming passing through after visiting Napa Sausalito or Muir woods.

Driving To Battery Spencer Viewpoint

The traffic patterns in Marin and Conzelman Rd. has changed in recent years after pilot programs to help alleviate traffic. Conzelman Rd. has been changed to a one-way road when descending down from the McCullough Rd. roundabout. This creates a one-way loop that is accessed only through the Baker-Barry Tunnel.

Coming from the north (traveling southbound on 101), you exit left on exit 442 onto Alexandar Avenue, followed by an immediate right Alexandar Avenue. Traveling about a half a mile down make a left onto Bunker Rd.

Coming from the south (traveling northbound on 101). Exiting at Alexandar Avenue, Bunker Rd. will be the first right.

Parking at Battery Spencer

Finding parking can be the most frustrating part of visiting Battery Spencer. It’s become a popular spot over the years and draws a lot of visitors. There are only 16 dedicated parking spots at the start of the trail but there are spots alongside Conzelman Rd.

Given Conzelman Rd. is now a one way descending, if you miss the parking lot or do not find parking nearby, you’ll have to circle back around through Bunker Rd. again. You can always park at the “North Tower Golden Gate Parking” and walking a short trail up to the viewpoint.

Getting To Battery Spencer By Uber or Lyft

Taking an Uber or Lyft to visit Battery Spencer may be the best option. It’s not without its hassles though compared to driving. Getting dropped off at Battery Spencer may be relatively straightforward, aside from the delays in traffic. Coordinating an Uber to leave the area gets complicated at peak hours because of the traffic patterns and limited places to stop, maneuver, or wait.

Our Recommendation For Uber or Lyft

Our recommendation to get there by Uber or Lyft is to be picked up and dropped off at a parking lot down the road and walk or hike up half a mile to the viewpoint.

The location to request on Uber is the “North Tower Golden Gate Parking”. From there it’s a .5 mile trail to the viewpoint. The trail consists of packed dirt. It follows the road but there’s a barrier between you and the cars.

Whether you are taking Uber or driving, you’ll have to walk a short trail from Conzelman Road to the viewpoint. It’s a .25 mile well-maintained path with a few stairs in between. You’ll pass by the old gun batteries on the way, and visitors are free to explore around the structures. The top of Battery Spencer is an enclosed large area with no benches or shade. There are no other trails or activities at the top.

Visiting Battery Spencer At Night

For a different experience and no crowds, you can visit during the night time. The park technically does not close and it’s open 24 hours. If you’re visiting at night there are no street lights on the road or any lighting on the path to the outlook. You can wait for your eyes to adjust and there should be enough ambient light to guide your way. Taking a walk under the moonlight is a unique experience by itself. Otherwise, your phone flashlight will do the trick. It does get pretty windy so I’d recommend friends to have a jacket in the car just in case.
